Green Valley Ranch Chardonnay 2013

Sonoma Coast

Warren Dutton planted this Chardonnay vineyard on an east-facing hillside west of the town of Graton in 1969. The clone planted in the vineyard, which produces exceptionally exotic, highly identifiable fruit, has since been propagated across California and is now referred to as the Z Clone when sourced outside of this vineyard. This vineyard's old vines produce clusters with tiny golden translucent berries with incredibly enticing flavors, floral aromatics, and tropical freshness.

The Jester is meant to be a wine for wine geeks and wine explorers. This wine is unoaked and the entire fermentation is done in temperature controlled stainless. As a result, you will experience a Chardonnay like no other as the wine expresses itself almost more as a very fruit forward Viogner or rich Sauvignon Blanc than a classic Chardonnay. We love this wine because it is such a pleasant surprise, so unique, and at the end of the day, so darn tasty to drink.

This a bright and vibrant example of the Chardonnay grape. Unadulterated by the use of oak this wine shines in it’s purity and transparency! 

This young Chardonnay is full of energy and minerality. The aromas are initially dominated by white flowers, which are reminiscent of citrus blossoms, but quickly followed by ripe pears and cantaloupe. On the palate there’s great generosity of fruit but not as ripe as the aromas suggested. It starts off with creamy flavors of lemon tart and meringue and finishes with fresh and tangy kumquats and sweet tangerines. 

The Jester does not want to be serious, powerful and assertive; it wants to be fun and enjoyed with friends on the hot summer days. Even though with creamy cheeses it takes on a more round and richer character, with fresh seafood it just livens the palate like a squeeze of lemon on dungeness crab.

Single Vineyard

Ernest Vineyards specializes in site-specific wines. Each of our wines comprises grapes from one vineyard and one vineyard only. For our Ernest labels, we use grapes from nine sites in all. Some sites are well-draining, some are on hillsides. Some face west, some are considered cold-climate. We work closely with growers and vineyard managers at each site to dial-in the farming to adhere to a style that maximizes flavor ripeness while keeping sugars down and acidity high. The result: Wines that are pure expressions of the sites from which they came.

We produce rosé under the Eugenia label; our current release, from the 2015 vintage, include two different wines. One—The Country Wife—is a rosé of cinsault, and is just like all of our other single-vineyard wines, made with grapes from one vineyard and one vineyard only. Another—The Motley—is a rosé of pinot noir, and is a blend from our very coldest pinot noir sites.

The Lab

In addition to Ernest and Eugenia, we own and operate a third label: Edaphos (pronounced ee-dah-fos). It means “base,” “ground,” and “soil” in Greek; we felt it was a good expression of our attitude behind this winemaking. We consider this part of our business to be our “laboratory,” the place where we make small-lot wines that incorporate new and exciting approaches to winemaking with different styles and off-beat grape varietals. Sometimes we also call it our “sandbox.” The Edaphos strategy enables us to explore, experiment, and apply some of the lessons we learn to wines we make under our other labels. It also allows us to produce different wines whenever we feel like making them.
