Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Edaphos Barbera Madhavan Vineyard gives up a pristine perfume of warm black and red cherries, black raspberries and black tea with hints of cinnamon, tobacco and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with perfumed red berries and earthy layers, supported by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing savory. 220 cases produced.
To say this 4-acre vineyard has unique terroir would be an understatement; it sits in the volcanic caldera of the Moon Mountain AVA in Sonoma County. Planted in 2008, the west-facing front block is peppered with boulders the size of watermelons and planted entirely with head-trained, dry-farmed Barbera. In fact, we find the site so inspiring, the Edaphos label art is a sketch of one Barbera vine.
Trademark notes of classic Barbera are present here: deep color, low tannins, high acidity and loads black and red fruits laced with notes of spices, herbs, minerals and dried fruits. Powerful, intense, firm and assertive with a finish that lingers on the palate with refreshing acidity and concentrated plummy flavors.
